This flagship wine from Sperling Vineyards grows from grapes planted in 1978 and isn't released before two years of bottle age has passed. Sperling Vineyards Old Vines Riesling 2016 highlights sweet petrol with a bit of rubber and lots of brightness in the glass. It's like a tire swing on a playground at the peak of summer; green apple, lime zest, and melon flavours. The palate is full and incredibly fruity but focused. It emits high acidity with lingering fruit on the finish — citrus fruit salad with a honey drizzle. There’s some obvious development alongside a sea of vibrant fresh fruit aromas and zippy acidity. Lime zest shows itself first, with hints of Granny Smith apple, lemon pith, and wet stone. The finish highlights a balance of residual sugar with acidity for days. Tasted September 2022.
